A last minute paring of Elzandri, with accomplished and top ranked Alexa Pienaar proved the undoing of previous champs and number one seeds, Alexander Fuller and Cheyna Wood.
Targeting the 15 year old Elzandri, was a poor decision when she went toe-to-toe with the previous world number 22, Fuller, and the single- handedly, slotted 5 consecutive winners to take the match away from the astonished SA champions ( and her doubles partner), with a 2-1 win. Elzandri is from Northerns & a SA Schools player who recently came 3rd in a Singapore tournament
After her magical Tswalu debut, Elzandri had a taste for more against the national number 3 seeds, Sasha Kent and Lizelle Muller. With Alexa providing sage advice to her partner, she was encouraged to play with cautious freedom, and the southpaw meeting power with power against her experienced opponents, and showing some deft of hand.
With Alexa trying to becalm former SA number one, Muller on the forehand side, Elzandri showed a distinct lack of respect for her elders, and had the wily Kent scuttling from back to front of court at will. One game all going into the decider, with no-one being brave enough to risk betting even an old 2 cent piece on the outcome.
Neck and neck, it was before Alexa got her teammate a couple of points ahead . At 10-8, matchball; Elzandri serving to Muller’s forehand, she pulled out a dead nick roller, to win the match
A simply amazing and astounding second victory for the lowest ranked pairing at the Tswalu SA Nationals Doubles at Joburg Country Club this weekend.
